Significant Funded Projects (as PI or Co-PI only)

Most recent first
  1. RAdio Ionosphere Density Explorer (RAIDER) – University Nanosat Project
2019-2021, $110K, Department of Defence/Air Force Research Laboratory
This is a educational project under the AFRL Univeristy Nanosat Program. Students will work through a design process for a satellite mission.

  2. Flexible Radio Array for Ionospheric and Atmospheric research (FRAIA)
2016-2018, $491K, Department of Defense/Air Force Office of Scientific Research
This is a equipment grant and research is not permitted under this funding. We expect that the construction of the equipment will lead to more future funding opportunities. The project consists of 18 ground-stations which have the capability of measuring VLF whistlers, tri-band 150/400/1067 MHz satellite beacons (other beacon frequencies can be added), and broad-band 3-85 MHz band. The stations can be combined in a phased array or used individually. They can be used for Whistler observations, lighnting observations, riometry, beacon satellite tomorgraphy, and as ionosonde and HF radar receivers.

  3. Van Allen Probes Energetic Particle Composition and Thermal Plasma Suite Analysis and Modeling.
2016-2017, $60K, New Mexico Consortium and Los Alamos National Laboratory
This is a project to use medium energy particles, 100 eV to 50 keV to determine the electric and magnetic field morphology in the Earth’s inner magnetosphere by mapping particle trajectories between spacecraft in modeled realistic electric and magnetic field models and compare with the spacecraft in-situ particle observations. I expect this seed project will lead to more proposals in the future.

  4. High-Resolution Imaging of Stellar Surfaces.
2013-2019, $530K, National Science Foundation, Astronomical Sciences/Adanced Technologies and Instrumentation
This project builds on several previous successful projects. It develops the instrument and software to carry out imaging observations at the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer. Interferometric Imaging using phase-bootstrapped baselines has long been considered the (current) ultimate goal of interferometry. The NPOI is the only operating interferometer with a layout to take advantege of baseline bootstrapping and we are the first group to demonstrate bootstrapping five telescopes.

  5. NMTSat: New Mexico Tech Nanosatellite
    2012-2018, $50K, NASA/EPSCoR
A seed money project which is resulting in the building and launch of NMTSat. The satellite is built by students at NMT including a number of instruments: a langmuir probe built by NMT students, two magnetometers built by NMT students, a optical beacon built by Los Alamos National Laboratory, and a GPS ooculation receiver buildt by ASTRA.

  6. A new, ground based data-assimilative model of the Earth’s Plasmasphere – a critical contribution to Radiation Belt modeling for Space Weather purposes
2011-2014, $2.5M (of which $250K came to NMT), European Union 7th Framework Programme
This is a large international collaboration funded by the European Union involving 11 institutions in Europe, North America, and Oceania. The project expands a network of ground-based ULF magnetic field sensors in Europe and a global array of Very Low Frequency RF observatories. Combined these can provide global observations of the Earth’s plasmsphere. These observations can be assimilated into a plasmasphere model. My portion of the project was to be responsible for the plasmaspher emodel and the data assimilation. This project has later results in setting up other valuable collaborations, proposals, and has even helped secure funding from US AFRL.

  7. Wireless Networking for Deep Mine Tunnels
    2010, $2K, NASA/SATOP
Seed money project to write a report for a small business in New Mexico. The funding is small but the contact is significant in that it has since lead to more collaboration with that company.

  8. Development of a Langmuir Probe for the QuadSat/PnP satellite
2010, $10K, Air Force Research Laboratory
A successful seed money project which resulted in the delivery of a instrument despite the low level of funding. The instrument was integrated on a Swedish satellite.

  9. Remote Sensing the Plasmasphere With Field Line Resonance Measurements
2009-2012, $200K, Air Force Research Laboratory
This is a project to use ground based magnetic field observations to remotely sense the plasma mass density in the Earth’s plasmaspher. We compared existing techniques with more robust techniques based on a physics-based plasma model, the Field-Line Interhemispheric Plasma (FLIP) model.

  10. High-Precision Optical Interferometry With Coherent Integration: Stellar Pulsations, Limb-Darkening, and faint binary companinons
    2009-2013, $350K, National Science Foundation
This is a project to develop the cohernet integration tecnique for optical interferometry and use it on data sets from the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer. Under this project we also began hardware developments which lead to a follow-on NSF project.

  11. Alternative Data Acquisition System for the Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer
    2007-2008, $10K, Seabrook Engineering/Naval Research
A seed project for demonstrating the use of a modern Field Programmable Gate Array system for data acquisition at the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer. Later funded projects depend on this.

  12. Interferometry Science and Technology
    2004-2005, $50K, U. S. Navy
A seed project to prototype some coherent integration techniques which are used in optical interferometry. Later proposals in optical interferometry build on this preliminary work.

  13. Time series analysis, prediction, and classification with genetic programming.
    2004-2005, $100K, LANL/U.S. Department of Energy.
A project to use genetic programming algorithms to classify time-series data.

  14. Magnetic structure and current signatures of storms and substorms
    2002-2005, $200K, NASA/Living with a Star.
A project to analyze the CRRES satellite magnetic field data to map currents.

  15. Distributed Sensor Networks with Collective Computation
    2001-2002, $150K, LANL/LDRD
A project to model the behavior of large networkds of wirelessly connected sensor and processing units. This work predates protocols and hardware that now exist, for example 802.15/Zigbee technology
